Small Group Opportunities

Listening Circles

We’ve started new small groups called “Listening Circles,” where 5-8 people get together, have dinner and play a game, called “My Neighbor’s Voice,” at least once per month. The card game “My Neighbor’s Voice” is played by each person picking a card with a category on it, and that person has three minutes to answer the question or prompt on the card. The main rule is no cross-talk: the rest of the group must listen and no one can respond to someone’s answer. After each person has answered a card, you debrief: how did you experience that session? What did you learn about your neighbors? It’s a wonderful way to be intentional about how getting to know your neighbors and build bridges across topics where there are often divides. If you would like to join a Circle, please reach out to me email Adam Benson.

Lectio Divina

Starting on Wednesday, February 7 at noon, we will start a hybrid (online and in-person) small group gathering where we will read scripture using an ancient practice called Lectio Divina, and the purpose of this kind of reading is to listen: both listen for how God or how the text is speaking into our lives, today. We will also have some time for visiting and getting to know one another, in-person and online. This time will be offered each Wednesday @ noon until March 20th, then we’ll take a two-week break, and resume on Wednesday, April 10 @ noon. To join in-person, you may come to the church and there will be directions to the fellowship hall. There will also be an online option, email Adam Benson for details.

Opportunities to Serve – January 2024

Rise Against Hunger

We are partnering with our CCoM (Parkwood, Christus Victor, and All Saints) to raise a total of $6,400 between our three churches, which leaves an average of about $2,133 per church. This will pay for about 15,000 meals that will go out across the world to schools, orphanages, and communities that need them. We learn where our meals go later on, after we’ve packed the meals. If everyone gave $50 each, we would easily reach our goal! Please consider donating and signing up for the event by clicking the link:

Parkwood UMC and the 50th Durham CROP Hunger Walk

The CROP walk is not just something we do every year, it really makes a difference in the lives of others around the world and in my community. 75% of the CROP money raised goes to Church World Service, who works to meet immediate hunger needs, welcome and provide housing and food for refugees and immigrants, and they are working to empower those on the margins out of poverty. 25% of the money raised goes to local agencies in right here in Durham who are working to feed folks and families and empower those on the margins. Please help us meet our goal of $3,000 by giving to CROP today.

Plan to join us on March 24, 2024 as Parkwood United Methodist Church participates in the 50th Durham CROP Hunger Walk

Donate to the Durham CROP Hunger Walk via our Team Page or Join the PUMC Walking Team
